Text Diappears from Hotmail in email or after typing.

Posted in Problems by on the August 27th, 2008

Problem is that certain lines of text or whole emails will simply not show up when viewing the emails on the web. You may type out a sentence and when you hit enter the text you just entered disappears. or you may get an email and portions of the email are missing, but if you highlight the area you can actually see the text. I have only seen this problem on Hotmail, and the only posts in the internet I see about it are for Hotmail.

You should find that if you highlight the area where the text should be you can see it, because it simply becomes invisible, not actually disappearing.

There are a few posts out there about this issue:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/31902058/text-disappears-from-emai.aspx
http://www.geekpedia.com/Thread14250_Text-Disappears-From-Email-From-Hotmail.html
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread2015.html

and fortunately after working with a customer on this same problem i have found a fix.

For internet explorer 7.0
Click on tools>internet options> accessibility under the General tab.
Check the second checkbox for “Ignore font styles specified on web pages”

This will tell internet explorer to ignore any special font styles(one of which is causing you a problem) and use standard formatting for everything.

Click ok and restart internet explorer and you should be back in business!

For Firefox

Click on tools>options>then on the Content tab. In the fonts and colors area hit advanced and uncheck the check box that says “allow web pages to use their own fonts rather than the selections above” or something similar.

Peachtree Quantum not responding

Posted in Uncategorized by on the April 8th, 2008

Issue: When trying to start up Peachtree the program stops responding before even getting to the login window.

This problem happened to me after a computer crashed while using Peachtree in a network installation although I would imagine it can occur for other reasons. Because it was a network installation the server could not just be restarted in the middle of the day to try and fix any file lock issues, first check and ensure that there are no open files accessing the Peachtree. You can do this through the computer management>shared files>open files window. What fixed the issue for me and might help if you are having a problem with Peachtree not being able to open your company file is restarting the Pervasive SQL Workgroup Engine service only, this way you do not have to restart the entire server.

You can easily restart the service by clicking start>run>type “services.msc”> find Pervasive, right click it and hit restart.

Acronis Failed to Restore File or Folder.

Posted in Uncategorized by on the January 24th, 2008

If you have backed up your system using Acronis, when trying to restore particular files or folders you may receive the following error, preventing you from restoring entire files or folders:

——————————————————-

Failed to restore file or folder ‘DOCS1-295616-v3-Lease by and between *************omitted********.doc’.
Failed to restore file or folder. (0×4001A)
Path = “C:\Documents and Settings\*omitted long folder name*”,
Hints = 1
Tag = 0xA8A1022BD18AE2A8
Error creating the file. (0×4000A)
function = “CreateFileW”,
filename = “C:\Documents and Settings\Larry\Desktop\EDS DATA\Drive(C)\Documents and Settings\Ed\My Documents\Ed’s Files\Old Computer Files\*omitted long folder name*”
Tag = 0xA8A1022BD18AE036
The system cannot find the path specified. (0xFFF0)
code = FFFFFFFF80070003
Tag = 0xBD28FDBD64EDB816: Retry/Ignore/Cancel

—————————————————————————

After trying to restore client data and getting this error, I have found the solution. Acronis support is absolutely no help, and it is extremely surprising/disappointing that the limitation was not made clear in any of their documentation or online forums. The problem stems from the NTFS file system and its file name limit of 255 characters. The problem is that on your system your file and folder names may be less than 255 characters, but when you restore with Acronis you are restoring the entire path name of the customer smacked on top of the path you are restoring it to on your local drive. For example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Larry\Desktop\RESTORE_FILES\C\Documents and Settings\huge_subdirectory_tree\document.doc

The solution is to restore the files directly to the C: drive, not your desktop or my docs and hope that the file name the customer has created is less than about 250 characters:

C:\C\Documents and Settings\huge_subdirectory_tree\document.doc

Damn Popups!

Posted in Uncategorized by on the August 14th, 2007

Got these popup’s???

“Windows Security Alert” Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt…Somebody’s trying to infect your PC with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan ow to protect your PC from Internet attacks, hijacking attempts and spyware! Click here to download spyware remover for total protection.”

Got icons that appear on your desktop?

“Privacy Protector”
“Spyware&malware Protection”

After running virus scans and AdAware/Spybot over and over these pop ups would just not go away, it appears that they come up using the csrss.exe process, according to Process Explorer anyway… The ONLY solutions I came accross was a program called SDfix.exe, thanks to the people at computing.net for finding this out.

Download the program here: http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

once downloaded reboot your computer and push F8 continuously to get into safe mode, once in safe mode run the file you downloaded to extract the files to your computer. Normally they are unzipped into the C: drive under the SDfix folder, go in there and run the runthis.bat file. This will scan your computer and remove files that it finds, after about 10 minutes it will ask you to continue and will reboot your computer, when you reboot you’ll see the results of this scan and you should be free from the annoying popups.

Installing Dell OpenManage on Centos 5.0(and 4.x) with CLI

Posted in Problems, Projects by on the July 27th, 2007

CentOS is not supported officially with the Dell OpenManage software, however it is quite easily installed, I came across these instructions from the swsoft forums. Although they are for CentOS 4.x it installed extremely easily on my dell poweredge 860 running CentOS 5.0, here are the commands to get it installed:

yum -y install gcc

w@get -q -O - http://linux.dell.com/repo/software/bootstrap.cgi | bash (NOTICE the @ in the w get command, you must remove the @ before the command will work.)

yum -y install dellhw-repository

yum install srvadmin-all

Some additional steps that the other tutorials left out are actually monitoring the stats of your server and starting the service.

To start the OpenManage service run the following command:

srvadmin-services.sh start

Running the OpenManage software through a CLI was also lacking some instructions. If there is no HTTP server running on the server you cannot access the OpenManage software through the web as it is normally accessed. After you have the software running you can run the command omhelp to see the different options. The choices are omconfig and omreport. You can add a -? to see the options available under that tree, for instance omreport -?, then you can choose your component. To monitor your raid, for instance, you could use a omreport storage vdisk to check the status of your virtual disks, you can monitor just about anything using the omreport command.

The best additional information for the OpenManage CLI commands is directly from the dell website at: https://dcse.dell.com/SelfStudy/Assoc_Server_Versions/server_9_self_study/omcli/prime.asp

Peachtree 2007 with Stamps.com

Posted in Uncategorized by on the July 13th, 2007

Stamps.com is no longer integrated with the new versions of Peachtree starting with 2007. I called and confirmed with Sage software that there was NO way to integrate Stamps.com with any version of Peachtree 2007. However there is a workaround I have found that Sage Software will not disclose. If you need to use the new Peachree but also want to print internet postage you can un-install the new version of the software, install the previous version (any version prior to 2007 should have the software integrated). Once the old software is installed you do not even have to register it, install the new version right over the top, once you do this you will find that you will once again have Stamps.com added into your print options in Peachtree.

W32/Giftcom.A-net infection screen capture + logins steal

Posted in Security by on the April 22nd, 2007

When I remove viri from client machines sometimes I keep a copy if it looks particularly bad. This one was quite interesting as I found it had IRC controls, thinking there was something to this I attempted to steal the username/password the virus was using to contact the IRC server…

Be sure to make it full screen for the best resolution.

MS06-040 Exploit Screen Capture

Posted in Security by on the April 15th, 2007

Soon after the MS06-040 exploit came out I found a win2k server that had been compromised by it. It appears it was only the entry point for a whole package they had stuck in after including ip scanners and the entire Metasploit Framework. I focused only on the original exploit and took a screen capture as I found out just how easy it was when you have a convenient little EXE there for you.

The video is in full 1024×768 resolution, double click to make it full screen.
